Wikiween: Wikipedia Categories Become Spooky Cemeteries

For the last few years I’ve tried to do a Halloween-themed Wikipedia tool. Finally, this year, on what I think is my third try, I got something I like! Check out Wikiween at https://wikitwister.com/wikiween/ .

Wikiween, a web site done in oranges and purples, very Halloween-y. Bats and ghosts float by in the background. In the middle of the page there's a form for searching Wikipedia categories.

Wikiween turns Wikipedia categories into spooky cemeteries! Start by entering a Wikipedia category. The form will autocomplete as you type. Obviously the category must contain people, at least one of whom should be dead, otherwise you’ll have an empty cemetery.

The Wikiween autocomplete at work. The keyword "fascists" has been searched for an shows a number of categories including Greek fascists, Neo-fascists, American fascists, and Female anti-fascists.

Once you’ve found your category click the Create Spooky Cemetery button. Wikiween will chug for a minute (maybe a few minutes depending on how large a category you pick) and afterwards present you with a headstone-filled cemetery!

Wikiween at work. Neo-fascists is the category searched for. The screen shows five tombstones in the result, including Maurice Bardeche and Mikis Mantakas.

Click on a tombstone to get more details about each person as well as a link to the original Wikipedia article.

Wikiween showing information on Francois Duprat. It's the brief description of his Wikipedia page along with a link back to the main article.

It should go without saying but the Internet is weird so let me make it clear: The Visit Full Memorial Page button is standard text and should not be taken as some kind of sentiment toward the subject of the tombstone.

I pushed myself to make this a little fancier than I usually go for and I like the way it turned out. It took a while to get the bats to do right but I like the way they fly behind the search form.
