Have you heard about Google’s new “preferred sources?” I’ll show you three other ways to discover news sources and bundle them into a Google search and one way to find TV news by US metro area.
CivicRadius Search: Find Gov Web Sites On a Map And Search Them Via Google
CivicRadius Search is a different way to find and search American government web sites. Instead of searching with keywords, search using city/state and radius and get results on a map.
Local Search America: Search the Web by DMA
Today I finished creating Local Search America, a new way to create specific search spaces for authoritative institutions in American DMAs. Enter a city/state. LSA identifies television stations and government agencies which serve that area as well as institutions of higher education in that area. Up to 25 of those sites can be bundled into a Google search (using Google’s site: operator.)
Video: How to Use US Local News Search
If you’ve got two minutes and seventeen seconds to spare, I can teach you how to use the US Local News Search. Enter in a city and state and discover the TV stations which serve that city as well as the newspapers and NPR stations which serve the state. Select up to 25 sources from […]
US Local News Search, Now With TV Stations, Newspapers, *and* NPR Member Stations
I’m still working to add new sources to the United States Local News Search ( https://searchtweaks.com/lns/ ). It started with just TV stations and then I added newspapers. I’ve now added a third source: NPR member stations. In addition, I’ve done some cleaning and polishing and the program’s easier to use. US Local News Search […]
US Local News Search Gets State Newspapers
I’ve been continuing work on my US Local News search because I’m sick of trying to find news online and getting whatever slop someone managed to slip into a search engine’s index. When I want local news I want LOCAL NEWS, not junk! I’ve just finished a new version and I’m pleased to share it […]

It’s available, free and free of ads, at https://www.nosyraleigh.com/ . Let me […]
Turning Raleigh Trees into Hyperlocal News Reporters
I’m having so much fun playing with Raleigh’s tree dataset and giving the trees something to say. Today I gave the trees some hyperlocal news mojo. How it works: when you ask a tree for local news, the program checks to find streets nearby. It then uses a news API to check WRAL, WTVD, and […]
I Talk to the Treeeeessss… with a ChatGPT API Call
I’ve learned enough since last October that I can revisit my project of having Raleigh’s trees act as tour guides for surrounding areas. The city of Raleigh offers an open dataset of city trees. Not every last tree in the city, of course, mostly trees on city property. My old program searched the tree database, […]
